In 2007, Lee, Sarah and Wes Welker established the “83 Foundation” (after Wes’ uniform number in San Diego, Miami and New England). The Foundation was renamed the “Wes Welker Foundation” in December 2009. Its work primarily benefits schools and other organizations in Welker’s hometown of Oklahoma City. Since its inception, the Wes Welker Foundation has awarded more than $2.3 million in grants to over 35 Oklahoma City schools and organizations.
These grants have paid for weight rooms, training and practice equipment for multiple sports, uniforms, improvements at facilities and on fields. In the Spring of 2019, the Wes Welker Foundation Board of Directors committed over $100,000 to the “1st Day Ready” project of the Oklahoma City Public School’s Pathway to Greatness initiative, thus beginning the revitalization of many Oklahoma City Public Schools with new field equipment where all kids will have an opportunity to participate and play in sports.
